Humpback whales are sociable whales and are seen often in pods of two or more whales. Single whales are often observed and said to be “on a mission” as they are traveling fast, possibly heading to the source of sounds from other whales.
Male Humpbacks are more likely to be traveling alone in search of a female however they too will end up being with other whales, either as an “escort” to a female whale and calf or with other male whales in fighting pods.
There is safety traveling in numbers especially in the ocean where predators abound. A whale is less likely to be attacked when in a group of whales in good health.
